Photo of the day: ZBD04A/WZ502G of Chengdu Military Region

According to this PLAdaily article (here) an armored regiment of Chengdu Military Region (MR) is now upgunned with the latest ZBD04A/WZ502G, this marks the fourth China Army MR to be equipped with this latest Norinco IFV.  The first three MRs with ZBD04A/WZ502G equipped units are Beijing, Shanyang and Lanzhou.    The challenge now for this Chengdu MR unit is to adopt ZBD04A/WZ502G properly for operations in the mountainous terrain, over the primitive road network and to trailblazer a new highland war-fighting doctrine for other units to follow.

Photo of the day: New tracked IFV with bolted armor

Since not having enough armor protection is one of the loudest complaint against the ZDB04 tracked IFV, it was not popular with overseas customers.   it appears that Norinco took the complaint to heart and address that deficiency with some bolted armor slap on its new family of IFV.

A new Chinese tracked vehicle family emerges

Little is known about this new IFV but thus far it seems to have developed a complete family of variants in various stages of testing or field deployments. Some unconfirmed claims pointing to a heavy Type 89/ZSD89/YW534 mod, but without a closer inspection or an official acknowledgement from Norinco, they are still speculations.

At any rate, the PLA is long over due for a modern tracked vehicle,  this is especially true consider the weak armor protection the old Type89 and 86 families have to offer.

Life can be so unfair

As part of the Firepower-2015 trans-MAC military exercise, an Air Defense Brigade of LanZhou Military Region was tasked to fend off a "blue army" fighter-bomber strike with only organic assets and no air cover.

Well, it was not a contest but rather a merciless massacre.   Life can be so unfair for some PLA grunts.

KUNMING, May 5 (ChinaMil) -- The "Firepower-2015", a trans-Military Area Command (MAC) military exercise for the artillery brigades of the Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), was kicked off at the PLA Nanjing Artillery Institute on May 4, 2015.

The seven artillery brigades participating in the military exercise come respectively from the PLA's seven MACs. They will try to enhance their capabilities through the realistic military exercise, including reconnaissance, situational awareness, command, control, fast maneuvering, artillery strike, overall defense and comprehensive support.

It is learnt that the "Firepower-2015", classified into three stages, will be carried out at the PLA Nanjing Artillery Institute in Nanjing city in east China's Jiangsu Province and the Qingtongxia Training Base under the PLA Lanzhou MAC in Wuzhong city in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Tang Ning, deputy director of the Military Training Department of the PLA General Staff Headquarters (GSH), said that during the "Firepower-2015" exercise, the artillery forces are totally integrated into the whole combat system based on the system of joint operations.

Instead of only paying attention to simple attack and defense as in the past, this military exercise sets up subjects according to the entire process of real combat operations, such as encounter, attack, defense, chase, retreat, airborne operation and anti-airborne operation, Tang added.
