China's new über 55,000 ton replenishment tanker (Type901)

For the last 12 months, there has been a hint that a 55,000t class new AOE  is under construction at GSI's Longxue shipyard.  Well,  judging from this latest set of photos, they are making good progress.

Amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics -- The PLAN is taking this military maxim to heart.

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Navy recently conducted a drill for a large fleet of naval vessels and aircraft including aircraft carrier Liaoning in the Bohai Sea, according to military sources on Thursday.

In formation with several destroyers and frigates, the Liaoning carried out training in reconnaissance and early warning systems, air interception, sea assault, air-defense and anti-missile exercises.

Carrying live ammunition, several batches of J-15 carrier-based aircraft had performed strike exercises.

The drill, part of the aircraft carrier's overall test and trial, examined weaponry functions and training quality, according to the naval sources.

Photo of the day: New PLAN training ship "83" undergoes sea trials

Looks huge

Saturday, October 08, 2016

The PLAN will get two new training ships.

The first one is the "Break Waves",  PLAN's first ever sail-training-ship with three masted square rigger, similar that of RNOV Shabab Oman.

Construction started May this year in Guangzhou and expected to launch second half of 2017.    The "Break Waves" will bear the pennant number of "86" and serve under the Dalian Naval Academy.

Personally, I prefer to see a Zheng He treasure ship replica in service with the PLAN over a more "Western" design. China's maritime tradition is just as proud as the next guy, but hey that's just me.

Overall: 85 m
Beam: 11 m
Speed: 18 kn
Displacement: 1200 t
Midshipmen: 50

New Chinese Cruiser: Updated Pics from Wuhan

Yesterday we announced our identification of a new mockup at Wuhan as the first hard evidence of the design of China's new large surface combat ship.  In what has become the normal sequence for China watching as of late, the first distant hazy photos were rapidly followed by a string of ever closer and clearer images.

Clear side profile, note the bow and hangar deck are not constructed.

This contents of this unusual extended superstructure are hotly debated.

Closeup boasting an exceptionally large bridge deck.
CDF members surmise this aft superstructure to be a hangar and possible pedestal for an L-Band radar.
The mockup of the CV LIAONING was built at Wuhan in late 2009, and the actual ship entered the fleet in 2012. Using this same timeline we might expect the keel of the new cruiser to be laid in 2015 with a 2017 commission date.

We will continue to watch the developments at Wuhan.  Join us in the CDF Forum to discuss this and other Chinese military topics.

Eat your heart out Mark Watney --  the Chinese just introduced 40 types of natural vegetation to those "自然仿真造岛" or "Natural Simulated Islands" in English.
