Snow Leopard Commando (Detechment), SpOps Daidu (Battlation) 1st Zhidui (Regiment), 2nd Mobile Zongdui (Division), Beijing, People's Armed Police

While the People's Armed Police is now officially under the military CMC command, it seems to have maintained its "civilian police" organizational and command structures with Zongdui (division) HQ at provincial level and Zhidui (regiment) HQ at prefectural level.  The Commando (platoon) units are, of course, your everyday traffic cops -- doing nothing but give out speeding citations to fulfill their daily quota.

This Snow Leopard Commando unit participated in the 2009 and the 2015 military parades. I suppose an inspiration to a certain president in North American .... I kid, I kid.

Anyways, here are some PR photos from their recent Blue vs Red drill against a regular PAP unit.  You can tell which is which by looking at their uniform.

The Chinese air force recently sent its Su-35 fighter jets to take part in a joint combat patrol over the South China Sea, the air force said in a release on Wednesday afternoon.

This is the first time the People's Liberation Army Air Force has made public the deployment of its Su-35s, built by Russia's Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association and introduced to China in late 2016. The air force did not reveal when the patrol took place.

The release said the multirole fighter jet's participation in combat exercises will help strengthen the air force's long-range operational capability.

The air force will continue pushing forward training to improve combat capabilities, it said.

Officials from Russia's state technology corporation Rostec said in November 2015 that Russia and China signed a contract that was estimated to be worth $2 billion for 24 Su-35s. The deal was later confirmed by Wu Qian, a spokesman for of the Chinese Defense Ministry.

The PLA's official website, 81.cn, previously said Su-35s started to be delivered to China in December 2016.

Russian news agency TASS said that as one of Russia's most advanced fighter jets, the Su-35 is equipped with phased array antenna radar and thrust vectoring engines. It has a maximum speed of 2,500 km per hour and is able to fly 3,400 km without refueling, according to TASS. The fighter is armed with a 30-mm gun and can carry 12 bombs or missiles, the report said.

GUIYANG, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- A ceremony was held Sunday at a military base in southwest China's Guizhou Province to mourn the air force servicemen who lost their lives in a recent military plane crash.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force plane crashed in Guizhou during a training session on Jan. 29. The staff aboard the plane died.

On Friday, they were honored as revolutionary martyrs by the air force of the Southern Theater Command.

The ceremony was attended by military leaders and members of the armed forces, local officials and relatives of the martyrs.

The servicemen who devoted their lives in the accident had previously completed missions in a number of military exercises and combat readiness training. They made important contributions in safeguarding the security of national sovereignty and the interests of national development, according to a statement issued by the air force.

Ensuring flight safety is the common pursuit of air forces all over the world, the statement read.

The PLA air force will continue military training under combat conditions with tough and strict standards and enhance its capability to win wars, according to the statement.

Navy, telecoms to install 4G+ on South China Sea islands

The Chinese navy and telecommunication corporations are cooperating to upgrade communications on some South China Sea islands and reefs, the official People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily reported Friday.

The PLA Navy's South China Sea Fleet has signed framework agreements to cooperate with the Hainan branches of China's three largest telecom operators to upgrade communications on the Xisha and Nansha islands and reefs.

Once completed in May, the project will bring 4G+ service to the islands and reefs.

The area, including Sansha city, mostly relies on satellites for current communications, Chen Xiangmiao, a research fellow at the National Institute for the South China Sea, told the Global Times on Friday.

Installing a 4G+ network in the Xisha and Nansha islands could be difficult for China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, Chen said, because of the wet climate, typhoons, long-distance transmission issues and the particular island and reef topography.

"Telecommunication companies faced limitations trying to install facilities in the Xisha and Nansha islands, but now by cooperating with the navy, the companies can take advantage of the expertise and resources of the military," he said.

The companies will build telecommunication base stations on islands and reefs including Yongxing, Yongshu and Meiji. The operators have also promised more affordable service packages for users, according to the report.

The upgrade will not only improve the living conditions of civilian and military residents but also support fishery, emergency response, maritime search and rescue and humanitarian relief efforts in nearby waters, the report said.

"Once the upgrade is finished, the telecommunication network will become a regional public service that will massively benefit people who work and live in the area," Chen said.

It will also be available for international use. Foreign fishing vessels passing by the area could use the service, Chen said. "To deliver a 4G signal in the South China Sea also shows China has sovereign rights to the area," he said.
