Photo of the day: Composition of Liaoning's first carrier strike group
According to folks in China, the first Liaoning carrier strike group is composite of two Type051C DDG, two 054A DDG and one supply ship. While this composition make sense, we are still waiting for further proof.
Probably because those more advanced vessels would be used to escort future indigenous carriers instead of this recycled training ship. Since the 051Cs were sitting around anyway, might as well put them to limited use.

any reasons why they are using the 051 destroyers rather than the more advanced 52c/d ones?

All ships burn diesel or diesel-like heavy fuel oils. Logistically it is easier to replenish during long trip with one oiler.
