Checking in with the Type 053H3 class frigate

The PLAN still maintains 8 Type 053H3 class Frigates (FFG) in its fleet (two of which were sold to the Bangladesh Navy), but they rarely receive any no media coverage.   For example, the majority of the class's air defense systems were upgraded in 2017, but a CCTV report on them only aired recently.    I suppose they aren't as appealing as the latest and greatest Type055.

Type 053H3 FFG gets an upgrade.

Judging by the recently completed Mid-Life extensions of PLAN's 053H3 FFG, its older air defense assets are now par with currently standards:  Out are the HQ-7 SAM and the 4x Type 76 dual 37mm AAA,  new are the HQ-10 (Chinese SeaRAM) and the 2xType730 CIWS.

The ten 053H3s still in service are considered "second tier" by the PLAN and being deployed as such.  However, since this class has organic hangar support for ASW helo and with a greater range, they are more versatile than the newer Type056.  Expect them to be around for a while.

PLAAF Unit Of The Day: 3rd Aviation Brigade, North Theater Command

Back in Aug 20th 2024, the PLA Daily Chinese Edition published (link) a rather plain, run-of-the-mill article with nothing specific about an Aviation Brigade, North Theater Command conducting drills under summer heat.  And I translate:

"In midsummer, an aviation brigade of the Air Force in the Northern Theater Command conducted multiple batches of high-intensity flight training around simulated confrontation, live-fire shooting and other subjects.

After the tower issued the order, several fighter planes slid out, roared into the sky, and flew to the training airspace.

Above the clouds, the red and blue sides formed attack formations to conduct air combat training. The blue pilot was the first to spot the target, adjust his attitude and prepare to attack. The red pilots evaded urgently and got out of the predicament... locked, escaped, and counterattacked. After several transitions between offense and defense, the red wingman pilots seized the opponent's tactical loopholes and decisively carried out simulated strikes"

After further digging, the unit mentioned in the article is identified as the 3rd Aviation Brigade, North Theater Command.   A proud PLAAF unit whose roots may be traced back to the PLAAF's founding and saw actions during the Korea War as elements of the "1st Division" then became 3rd Regiment, 1st Fighter Aviation Division, in May 1970.    The 3rd Regiment was outfitted with J-8II fighters in the 1980s; however, in contrast to her sister regiment, the 1st, the 3rd was never given the Su-27 or J-11 as an intermediate. In September 2018 (link), the 3rd swapped its J-8II to the J-16, thus skipping a generation.

Beginning in early 2010 and ending around 2018, the 3rd Regiment, 1st Fighter Aviation Division was upgraded as the 3rd Aviation Brigade,  organic to the North Theater Command.   "The 1st Fighter Division HQ is dead,  long live the 1st Fighter Division HQ"

PLAN's Trimaran Search and Rescue Boats

PLAN's experimentation with Trimaran Hull for ocean-going operations appears to be done for now, with only three search and rescue boats commissioned in the early 2010s.   (South Rescue 南救 511, North Rescue 北救 143, and East Rescue 东救 335) One for each fleet, weighing 550 tons each.

Aside from a few drills, their current job is primarily as "harbor queens" at naval fleet headquarters.

Trimaran to the rescue

Last week People's Liberation Army 425 Hospital, South Sea Fleet S&R Detachment and Hainan Maritime Safety Administration conducted a joint downed pilot rescue drill in open sea.   The noteworthy item of this drill is the seldom-seen PLAN high-speed S&R trimaran (South Rescue 511) taking part.

This new class of trimaran was spotted in Feb 2013 in service with the South Sea Fleet but enjoyed very little media coverage since.

PLAN "proof of concept" trimaran

Photos taken in Guangxi,  it seems that the PLAN is also interested in testing trimaran for naval applications.

Drone Warfare Post Of The Day: New PLA Battlefield Surveillance Radar

This new man-portable Battlefield Surveillance Radar,  weighing 20kg, is designed to detect moving targets such as a person up to 5 kilometers, tanks at 10 kilometers, and, most critically, low-flying UAVs at an unspecific range.  It is also outfitted with a real-time digital communication link that connects other battlefield equipment.
