In November 2004, China reached a 980 million USD contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport for 64 launching units of the S-300MPU2 “Favorit” Air Defense Missile systems (NATO reporting name: SA-20B Gargoyle B). The deal also signified China as the S-300PMU2’s first customer.
In addition to the 64 launching units, the deal also contained 256 Type 48N6E2 missiles in launch transport containers with 41 extras for reload. It also included the 54K6E2 Battle-Management Station linked with 300km effective-range 64N6E2 S-band search radar, a 30N6E2 multipurpose illumination and guidance X-band radar, and a multiple-beam phased array antenna all-altitude target designation 96L6E radar. Giving the 54K6E2 the capability to guide 72 missiles and engage 36 targets, including ballistic missiles, simultaneously.
First delivery of the imported S-300MPU2 took place in 2006 in a batch of 8 batteries (equipping two battalions) and the last batch of 8 batteries was delivered in the summer of 2008. They are stationed at Shanghai, protecting China’s most important commercial city.
