Armed forces from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states will hold the "Peace Mission 2012" drill in Tajikistan from June 8 to 14, Ministry of Defense spokesman Yang Yujun announced Thursday.

The drill is a joint anti-terrorism military exercise launched under the SCO framework, Yang said, adding that the drill will involve more than 2,000 military personnel from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Yang said the drill will focus on the preparation and implementation of joint anti-terrorism action in mountainous areas in the context of a regional crisis incurred by terrorist activity.
Yang said defense and security cooperation is an important part of relations conducted between SCO member states, adding that members have established a mechanism allowing for meetings between defense ministers and held meetings between SCO military chiefs over the last decade.

Member states have staged eight anti-terrorism drills, held five security forums and conducted exchanges concerning defense cooperation and personnel training, he said.
Defense and security cooperation has deepened military trust among SCO member states and enhanced their ability to cope with new challenges, he said, adding that cooperation has played a positive role in safeguarding regional peace and stability.

Over the last decade, the SCO's drills have developed from company-level tactical exercises to multilevel exercises featuring strategic consultation, battle preparation and simulated combat, he said, adding that the venues and varieties of soldiers involved in the drills have also evolved.

The drills have cemented and deepened SCO defense and security cooperation, strengthened the cohesiveness of the organization and increased mutual strategic trust between China and other SCO member states, Yang said.

Peace Mission 2009 -- PLA Weapons

Looking at the weapons list the PLA is bringing to this exercise, I so want to play Steel Panthers III Brigade Command: 1939-1999 again.

Such display of heavy armor seems somewhat out of place in light of China's current security requirement. To the East is the mountainous terrain of Korea, jungles to the South and yet more mountains to the West and there is an island somewhere. The only tank-suitable terrain is Russia. Oh yeah, I got it, they want to invade Russia with help from the Russians!

Type 89 (YW531) (ZSD89) Command APC

Type86B (WZ501) (ZBD86) IFV

Type 99A (WZ123) (ZTZ99) MBT

PTL02 6x6 Wheeled Self-Propelled 100mm Assaulter

Type 89 (PLZ89) ((WZ/WMZ322) 122mm Self-Propelled Howitzer

WZ-9 Attack Helicopter

WZ-9 Light Attack/Scot Helicopter

Mi-171 Transport Helicopter

The United States has oceans to it's east and west. And subservient regimes with very limited defensive capabilities to it's north and south. And yet it's armour operates on every continent on the planet - spreading democracy by killing over four million civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, Korea and Vietnam. Many other proxy wars in South America and all over the world.

China tanks are to cause Uncle Sam to think twice before it "mistakenly believes" China has WMDs(which no-one except USA and it's favored allies can have) and comes to spread democracy like they've done in so many other places.
