The following two videos are Col (Ret) Blasko's recent lecture about the Chinese military at Whittier. It is very insightful, I highly recommend it and hopefully this lecture will clarify some of the questions you have -- the part about the Chinese concept of deterrence is especially good. (Warning, watching the lecture may tempt you to read the Art-of-War again)
