According to Andrew KC, there are over 1200 "original" Type 96 still in service.
Type-96:
12th GA - 2nd Armored Division - 5th Armored Regiment - 93
13th GA - 149th Motorized Division - Armored Regiment - 93
20th GA - Armored Brigade - 124
31st GA - 86th Motorized Division - Armored Regiment - 93, 91st Motorized Division - Armored Regiment - 93
41st GA - 121st Motorized Division - Armored Regiment - 93, 123rd Mechanized Division - Armored Regiment - 93
42nd GA - 163rd Motorized Division - Armored Regiment - 93
54th GA - 127th Mechanized Division - Armored Regiment - 93, 162nd Motorized Division - Armored Regiment - 93
XJMR - 6th Mechanized Division - Armored Regiment - 93
This gives a total of 1,054. One also needs to account for the training regiments/bases that have Type-96. Assuming around 4 battalions total, we get somewhere around 1,200 units total in the PLA.
The current production model -- Type 96A/G

Thanks for the great pics!!!
It is good they did not go with that proposed model.
It is a very ugly tank.
The armor looks like it was derived from a Merkava II.
