Learning Something New Everyday: Naval QJG02 14.5mm AAA

During the present "Type 075 landing helicopter dock" Hainan 031 visit to Hong Kong, it was demonstrated that it is outfitted with four QJG02 14.5mm AAA mounts for anti-drone, low-flying helicopter, and speed boat defense.   While Americans prefer to install their Ma Deuce.50 Cal Machine Gun on anything that moves on its own, the Chinese are gradually switching to the 14.5mm caliber from their 12.7mm counterpart.

In addition to the Type 075,  QJG02 14.5mm AAA is also found at the later copies of the Type056A as well.

On Oct. 12, 2000, an explosion rocked the hull of guided-missile destroyer Cole as it sat for refueling in the Port of Aden, Yemen.

The 40-by-60-foot hole created by the explosion left all able-bodied sailors battling fires and flooding for 96 hours just to stay afloat. Seventeen sailors were killed, and another 37 injured by the blast.

14.5 mm QJG 02, China's standard second-line dual-purpose HMG

14.5x115mm, 500 rounds per minute.

A quintessential Chinese infantry weapon of the early 2000s:  Man-portable (a 5-man crew), can fire either Chinese/Soviet ammo and build on top of a mixture of Soviet lineage and local mod/improvement.   Also, found in the Middle East.

Recently I stumbled into a terrific PLA-related YouTube channel called "Type 56: Story of the SKS and AK-47 in China," and after a few views, I couldn't help but but recommend it here on this blog.

Type 63 107mm, the AK47 of MRL, now being boosted with laser guided rounds

Aside from the J-7, another example of a weapon system with a long service life with the PLA is the Type 63 107mm.  It was formally introduced into service in 1963 and is still in use by PLA OpOps and the 15th Airborne due to its minimal weight and ease of transport and operation.  

With the introduction of new laser guided rounds, it is expected that they will remain in service for some time.  Of course, this widely exported system is also used by dozens of foreign users, surely some of them would be interested in this new laser guided offering as well.

The new and improved "technicals" revealed in the streets of Somalia

The African conflict zone tactical-truck is famously armed with the rusty old Soviet DShK 12.7mm HMG (as seen on the movie "Blackhawk down"). With the backing of the US (here) , African Union (AU) troops can afford to put something better on their trucks in the fight to retake the Somali capital -- Type 88 HMG and Type 63 107mm MRL.

Nice and shinny -- the second-hand, recalled, Toyota Corolla of all tacticals.

Defending China for 60 years!

After showing off latest J-35A,  J-20S,  J-15D/T and J-16,  it is only fair to share which old bird the PLAAF is continuing to operate on.

J-7, elephant walk, as part of the celebration of its service with the PLAAF for over 60 years. 

New Real Star Of The Zhuhai Airshow

As if J-35A, J-15D/T and J20 are not star-power enough to ensure that the Zhuhai Airshow is a success,  the PLA release their most powerful weapon,  errr I meant their actual combat pilots from the LH,  PLAAF and the PLANAF as a double-down.

 Judging by the media coverage in China, YouTube comments regarding them,  this particular media strategy worked beautifully (no pun intended)
