Well, according to this recent CCTV news report, the PLAAF "red flag" test range in northwest China is code named "area 52". It might be just a might be a coincident but I have a feeling that they were inspired by what the USAF's Tonopah Test Range has to offer in training next generation of combat pilots.

Recently, the PLAAF gathered over 100 birds for an "air-combat testing
assessment" and the participating fighter regiments are as follow: The
1st (J-11B), 4th (J-8DF), 8th (J-10), 42nd (J-7E), 54th (Su-30) and 55th
(J-11).
