Spotter Of The Day: Y-20 Spotted at Watcrouff Air Force Base, South Africa

Likely to be there for the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) happening in 2 days.  Don't worry, the Y-20 is not there to deliver "Freedom and Confucianism" to Africa as some might have feared.

Hi Res Photo Of The Day: J-7L Light Fighter

Yes, they are still making upgrades to the J-7E model, which resulting in the new J-7L (see picture below).   Notice the PL-8B Short Range Air To Air Missile (SRAAM) being carried?  PL-8B is the current standard SRAAM for the J-10, J-11, JH-7, and JL-9 fleets, offering an all-aspect, broader off-boresight angle of attack to a range of 20 kilometers compared to the previous version of PL-8.  It is also compatible with Chinese helmet-mounted sights (HMS).

I suppose with PL-8B SRAAM, one would argue that, the J-7L could be an inexpensive short-range dogfighter.  Time to let it go man.  Let it go

This J-7L is from a Fighter Brigade of Southern Theater Command, most likely to be the 52nd Fighter Brigade

Poor J-7 indeed! I know many J-7s & J-6s will end their days as targets, but it's hard to watch.
On the other hand, the J-10C has evolved into a formidable aircraft.

Close Cncounters Of The Second Drone Carrier Kind

Most China Navy (PLAN) observers are concentrated on the "Type 076 Light Carrier/Drone Mothership" and for good reason, for it is the world's first UCAV/amphibious assault ship hybrid, weighting roughly 40,000 tons and now under construction in Shanghai (here).

Judging by the latest image posted on Chinese Internet, the PLAN is building or modifying a "drone carrier" based on the Type 074A Class LSM, weighing roughly 800 tons, much smaller than her Type 076 sister. However, if the program is successful, Chinese shipyards would surely produce a large number of drones carriers in a short period of time, raising the concept of "drone swarm" to a new height. Pun was, of course, intended.

The addition of a "flat top" layer provides more storage space below deck, while the open-ended design simplifies drone recovery operations.

Sino Russian Coast Guard "China-Russia Coast Guard 2024" Joint Exercise. Not against any third party, of course.

Cutters taking part of this exercise are China Coast Guard vessels CCG 2303 Meishan and CCG 2305 Xiushan.   If they look familar to readers of this blog, because both cutters are civilian variant of the Type054A FFG.

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A formation of China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels departed on Friday morning for Russia to carry out joint drills and patrol tasks between the two countries' coast guards, the CCG said Friday.

The Chinese and Russian coast guards will hold joint drills in maritime security threat crackdown and maritime rescue, following which vessel formations of the two sides will jointly patrol waters in the northern Pacific Ocean, according to the CCG.

The CCG noted that the drills and patrol tasks are not aimed at any third party and are unrelated to the current international and regional situations.

The purpose is to consolidate and deepen the friendly and practical cooperation between the maritime law enforcement forces of the two countries, improve joint patrol organizational and coordination mechanisms, and enhance their ability to jointly respond to various maritime security threats, it added.

China's Coast Guard getting their own Type054 based hull

And why not,  since the Type054 is a proven design with 24 hulls already in service and an extensive record of overseas deployments by the PLAN.  By sharing the common hull with the PLAN, the Coast Guard is applying the economy-of-scale of the per unit cost in addition to reductions in logistics support and  maintenance costs.

The Coast Guard is also sharing the same hull with Type056 so this is not unprecedented.

What do they perfer? She is 30 or She is 40?

The Royal Thailand Army ordered another batch of 1,000-round 122mm rockets from China, including the SHE-30 range 30 km and the SHE-40 range 40 km, feeding the equipped with the SR-4 modular 122mm rocket launcher (export version of Type 11 MRL) also imported from China.

Although the Thailand National Defense Technology Institute has brought the required technology to home-made 122mm rockets and has performed testing, the domestic version of the SHE family has yet to be mass produced.
